phOTO_o_tHE_dAY #1090 - Nabi Musa, the Tomb of Prophet Moses, is located 12 miles (20 km) east of Jerusalem in the Judean wilderness, not far from Jericho, Israel. The present shrine, mosque, minaret and rooms were built during the reign of Al-Dhaher Baybers, a Mamluk Sultan in 1269 AD. Over the medieval period, hostels for travellers were built here and the present form was completed in 1480. In 820 Ottoman Turks restored the buildings. Photograph taken from the Jerusalem-Jericho road, the main route used by Mediterranean Arabs to make their pilgrimage to Mecca. The sight of this ancient building marked the end of the first day's march in that direction from Jerusalem. Moses' distant gravesite beyond the Jordan Valley became confused with Moses' tomb itself, laying the ground for the cultic importance that Nabi Musa was to acquire in the Palestinian worship of saints.

In the spring of 1806 Thomas Lincoln, the father or Abraham, took a flatboat loaded with produce from West Point Kentucky (est. 1789), at the confluence of the Ohio & Salt Rivers, to New Orleans Louisiana. The trip of over 700 miles required about 60 days. This was a profitable river journey and enabled Thomas to make final plans for his marriage to Nancy Hanks in June of that year.

This Brumos Porsche Prototype #58, traveled 2,616 miles in the 24 period. Team Brumos of Jacksonville, Florida took the checkered flag by an unbelieveable .167 seconds. 1,440 minutes later (24 hours), 4 cars remained on the same lap. 58 cars saw the green flag drop at 3:30 pm est. David Donohue (son of famous Mark) passed Juan Pablo Montoya with 39 minutes left. There are four drivers per team.

One of 225 built, this Cupola style was manufactured in 1942 and rebuilt in 1970. It provided the train crew with shelter, a conductor’s seat and desk, a coal fired heat stove, a 12 volt DC refrig, a microphor chemical toilet, three pairs of facing bench seats that could be converted into bunks and two cupola seats. These cars presented some operational issues because they had to be turned to face the proper direction. Tradition on many lines held that cabooses be painted a bright red. Seen one lately?

This stream is called Nahal Senir and in ancient times the water flowed from Pans’ Cave. Around 325 BC this cave was used for pagan worship to Pan, the half-man, half goat greek god of panic & fright. To this day remnants of a shrine, courtyards and votive niches are visible. The great confession and transfiguration occurred near the town of Caesarea Philippi (Banias) and is mentioned in the bible. (Matthew 16:13)

Known locally as “Three Spot”, often pulled 30 to 40 cars as it transported logs from area woodlands near Gulf Hammmock Florida to the Patterson-McInnis sawmill. Originally a wood burning engine and built around 1915, it was converted to steam during its service, which ended shortly after World War II. The locomotive was donated by the Paterson-McInnis lumber company in 1969 and is “maintained” by the Florida Department of Transportation. Watch out for the fenced, barbed wired display on the way-side, all along the south-bound U.S. Hwy 19-98 in Levy County, on the west Gulf Coast of Florida. And if you’ve never encountered no see-ums, this is your opportunity.
