Mentioned in the New Testament as the home of the apostles Peter, Andrew, James and John, as well as the tax collector Matthew. In Matthew 4:13 the town was reported to have been the home of Jesus himself.

phOTO-o-tHE-dAY #69 - Camels are domesticated desert animals that have reputations for being bad tempered. Walking up to one like you would a thoroughbred horse is something I don’t recommend (besides their breath is horrendous). To their owners they are very docile creatures and very loyal. Camels have two pair of eyelashes, one- a very long curly pair to shade their eyes from the sun & flies, and a second, shorter, straight pair to protect their eyes from blowing sand. Camels can live a life of forty years, making them one of the more sturdy animals on the planet. In intense heat they have been known to go for seven days without water and can carry over 400 pounds on their humps. For a couple of dollars you can ride (on) one and listen to the sandpaper swoosh of the salad plate sized hooves on the sandstone. Their knees are worn to the bone from their resting kneel.

I was amazed when the goat raised the bet, called and won the pot. “I've never seen such a smart goat”, I said. “He ain’t that smart”, replied one of the farmers, “whenever he gets a real good hand, he wags his tail”.

phOTO-o-tHE-dAY #79 - the twice life-sized, Monumental “Buffalo Bill” (William Cody) sculpture in Oakley, Kansas was formed by artist extraordinaire-Charlie Norton. Oakley Kansas is on the high plains, in the valley of the Smoky Hill River, in the near west of America, about 60 miles east of the Colorado/Kansas state line. The Logan County area is proud of it’s heritage and one of the most famous persons of all time got his legendary title in this region of our county. Buffalo Bill & I share the same hometown- Leavenworth, Kansas. Bill is riding his buffalo horse "Brigham" with the aid of his 1866 50-70 calibre Springfield rifle he named "Lucrita Borgia". Buffalo Bill fulfilled his contract with the railroad as far west as Sheridan, Kansas. From 1867-1868 the Kansas Pacific Railroad was being built in the heart of American buffalo country. From points west of Hays. Kansas, fresh bison meat was hazardous to obtain due to hostile Indians. The railroad employed hunters to provide fresh bison meat for the crews. "Buffalo Bill" was one of the buffalo hunters. Bill Cody “Buffalo Bill” died in 1917 and is buried on Lookout Mountain, Colorado, within site of the great plains and the Colorado Rockies.

The Judeo-Christians of Capharnaum worshiped from a large rock here which Jesus is said to have laid the bread and fish before he fed the five thousand on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. (Mark 6:30-44). A Byzantine church with a cruciform layout was erected by a Jewish nobleman from Tiberias, and built next to the [ancient] road to&from Rome- the Via Maris. Its mosaic floor is of great artistic value and reveals Egyptian influence. During the Perisan invasion the original heptapegon Church was destroyed and faded into oblivion. After the Muslim conquest in 636 A.D., Christian activity ceased around the lake for centuries. Then in 1932, the ancient ruins, hidden for 1,300 years, were excavated. The mosaics were found to be in a large extent, intact. From 1980-82 the ancient Byzantine basilica was reconstructed, over the ancient mosaics, hence the view of this image.

The modern day population of Alasehir is near 40,000 and is a trade center for grapes, mineral water, fruit, and tobacco. Near where I took this image stands the ruinious remains of the Christian Byzantine basillica of Philadelphia, a strong ally of the Roman Empire, started in 133 a.d. The sixth letter of the Apostle John to the Seven Churches of Asia Minor was the letter to Philadelphia. (Revelations 1:11 & 3:7-13). Philadelphia always stayed faithful to Christian Faith till end of its history and was a missionary city from the beginning. It was founded to promote a unity of spirit, customs, and loyalty within the realm and hosted many social purposes. 26 miles from Sardis, the valley road here was a lifeline connection with the Indo-European Phyrgain territory and the harbors of the Aegean Sea. Earthquakes here are often recorded with the written history. A very severe earthquake occured in 17 AD, which destroyed this city and eleven others. Philadelphia shook more frequently from severe aftershocks, traumatizing the population and folks moved to their farm houses in the countryside. By the third century, paganism had held on in the face of a Christianizing Empire, and the city became known as “little Athens” for its dedication to deities; the most important divinity was to the God of the Grape Vine- Bachus. None of these names or epithets lasted. Alasehir (Philadelphia) is known as the original city of original brotherly love, as this picture depicts.

(Revelations 1:11; 3:7-13) Powerful earthquakes makes the task of recovering the past in archaeology a difficult one. All that is left of the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, Turkey are four huge foundation corners. Philadelphia was founded by Eumenes King of Pergamum (197-160 BC), and named it after his brother Attalus (159-138 BC), who through loyalty won the title Philadelphus (brother love). After the death of Attalus III the city was handed over to Roman rule in 133 BC and became a strong ally of Roman Empire. The name of the city changed often when certain Emperors helped the city grow; such in the instance of emperor Tiberius. Philadelphia always stayed faithful to Christian Faith till end of its history and in New Testament times was part of the Roman province of Asia. Early Church history reveals that Ignatius made a visit to the city on his way to his martyrdom in Rome.The town was devastated by an earthquake in A.D. 17 and folk here still live in the fear of earthquakes.

phOTO-o-tHE-dAY #52 - Joppa/Jaffa, meaning beautiful, is situated along the Mediterranean sea coast. Joppa is considered one of the oldest cities in Israel and the oldest port in the world. Once the home of Simon the Tanner. The hill of Joppa is called Andromeda, named after the daughter of the King&Queen of Ethiopia, depicted in the 1981 movie- Clash of the TItans. The view here offers a grand view of pleasant sandy beaches and the occasional rock outcroppings give the coast a scalloped appearance. The prevailing waves made docking at the ancient harbor difficult and ships of any size didn’t dock at the port of Joppa, they anchored offshore. While the port is difficult, it’s close proximity to Jerusalem (35 miles to the southeast) and TelAviv (1 mile to the northeast) brought goods, materials and served as the landing port for pilgrims headed for the holy city. According to biblical accounts, Jonah fled the Lord from Joppa, and had a confrontation with his self, learned obedience, gained a will of a spirit of gratitude, compassion and learned of God’s patience & mercy, all within a whale; as told in the Old testament. (Jonah 1:2 - 4:11)

Mapped today as Wadi Mamshit, this location is near the ancient antiquity site of the Nabatean city of Kurnub. Part of our half-day journey was a ride to a uniquely outstanding circular phenomenon formed by erosion, geologically named Ha-Makhtesh Ha-Gadol.

Many fierce battles are the reason for the many bullet holes on the face of the wall near the Gate of Zion. During the War of Independence in 1948, the gate was the scene of some hard battles, during which soldiers of the Israeli Defense Force tried to break the siege around the Jewish Quarter of the Old City, held by the Jordanians.

His record breaking career put him on the podium 154 times in 248 starts. Michael has won 91 Grand Prix races, collected the pole position 68 times, set 76 fast laps and was victorious at 22 different race tracks. Always defiant, Michael Schumacher has won 7 world F1 Championships.

phOTO-o-tHE-dAY #28 - This 6th century Greek Orthodox monastery is built over the cave site on the side of the Mount of Temptation, and according to the New Testament is where Jesus Christ was tempted by the devil during a 40 day period of fasting. The Mount of Temptation monastery stands 1,46 precariously feet above sea level on a clifftop overlooking Jerico; which is not only the oldest city in the world, but one of the lowest cities in the world. This is also the Dead Sea region of Israel. There are nearly 40 caves on the eastern slopes of the Mount of Temptation and these have been inhabited by monks and hermits since the beginnings of Christianity. Originally a fortress called Doq stood on the summit around 198 b.c.

Here, with his Black Walnut harvest of 2004 which brings $6.00 a pint for the nut meat [note the chicken wire for protection from squirrels & that deep freeze is full of fish filets & venison]. Loren is the last surviving grandchild of my maternal great-grand parents. Born in October of 1915, Loren is my dad`s 1st cousin and can get out of a chair quicker than most folks- thanks to his true Kansas sport heritage. He is full of yarns, quirks, tall tales, and big fish stories - one of which is how to hand-catch catfish utilizing the scary noodling method. He can tell you all about the heated 1928 general election, brag about the names of his quarter-horse race horses he trained & the number of times his steeds won, place`d or show`d at Eureka Downs, tell you about the time he met Wil Rogers, how to scald & butcher a two-hundred pound pig, show you a polaroid of his favorite Blue Tick Coon Dog stud breeder dog, what the best fertilizer to use on rhubarb, his illustrious chases for women - particularly at barn dances, let you borrow one of his classic tobacco pipes, how he traded guns from the Nebraska state line onward into Oklahoma, his record baggage for raccoon kills on overnight, full moon, hunting excursions- packing on mules, with his pal Waldo Gray, how he bartered the fruits of his labor in fur trapper trade, point out the lay of the Flint Hills land, and where he sends his isms, editorials and commentaries to. Besides other traits Loren & I share the relative name from the Butterfield genealogy root.

The most extensive structure in Turkish secular architecture it was erected in 1467 after the conquest of Istanbul by the Turks & used until the 1920’s. Once a week, after the morning prayer, the Divan Council gathered under this dome, and the court was full of high ranking officials wearing gorgeous garments. During the heyday of the Ottoman Empire around 4,000 people lived in the Topkapi Palace confines, consisting of the grand palace itself, four huge courts, stables, three kitchens and the harem section. Over time, 37 Sultans ruled here.

Fertile soil and gold deposits contributed greatly to the growth and prosperity of this settlement for over 1,500 years. Put that in your 229+ years of Federal independence history books. Distinguished by numerous reasons- including the pursuit of knowledge, a development of the arts, correct roles in civic responsibility, modernization and personal body development (through mind, health and spirit). Sardis became a very powerful empire with amenities such as the alter, the stadium and public baths(toilets). Sardis became increasingly Hellenized in Roman times. The image enclosed shows part of the city remains that date from the 4th -7th century A.D. The modern town of Sart today, grew out of the Turkish War of Independence in 1919-1922.

phOTO-o-tHE-dAY #10 - Twenty miles north of Eilat Israel in the desert south of the Red Sea at Timna Park is the area of King Solomon’s (copper) mines of 6,000 years ago. Located here is a life-size replica of the biblical Tabernacle. Pictured here is Josh(ua) saying “Here!, join me”. The tabernacle, or tent of meeting, was an elaborate portable church that served as God’s “home” when folks were in the wilderness. At one time the Ark of the Covenant and other holy items were housed within. The Tabernacle was made of wooden boards covered with layers of rich fabric, and gold & silver ornaments. Moses often pitched a tent outside their camp, where he and the people could meet God.

The change here is the focal point. macro/micro/close up. Using a large aperture brought the conifer edges into focus, making the moon subject out of focus. I also used a fill-in flash. This photo was also taken in the chill of a late afternoon in northwest Arizona on the Navajo Indian Reservation near Pinon.

Inside the 4th century Byzantine church here is an ancient floor mosaic that depicts the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish where Jesus fed the five thousand who gathered to hear him preach.

At the top of this mountain is where Jesus wandered for 40 days & 40 nights as he fasted and prayed. This is also where Satan tried to tempt Jesus by showing him all the desires of this world. (Matthew 4:1). Off in the blue distance is the Dead Sea. Jericho is in sight here, too. Held as not only the oldest city in the world, but one of the lowest, is a Palestinian controlled town on the West Bank of Israel in the Jordan Rift Valley Notice the large Building of Temptation, a Casino. I took this image from the elevation of a cable car ride to the top of the Mount of Temptation. Tomorrow’s pic-o-the-day image #28 will be of the Mount of Temptation Monastery, which stands precariously on this cliff top, overlooking the ancient city of Jericho in the Valley.

This particular stoop, er stop was one of the planets first sit-downs. A long way from interstate rest areas. Seriously folks, Ephesus, is known as Turkey’s “crown jewel” of ancient ruins, is the largest archeological excavation in the world and still on-going. With its mosaic sidewalks, city streets, library and enormous theater, one can sense the place where Paul preached and lived for three years.

phOTO-o-tHE-dAY #34 - The Dome of the Rock stands on the Temple Mount of Old Jerusalem and is one of the most impressive and beautiful shrines in the Islamic world. Originally built in 691 A.D. The Golden Dome was recently recovered with an aluminum-gold alloy, donated by the late King Hussein of Jordon. The Golden Dome was built directly over the rock where the Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. Another religious tradition suggests that this is the Rock told in the book of Genesis 22:4, when-where Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son Issac, only to be stopped by an Angel of the Lord. This interior rock is surrounded by unbelievable carpets, deeply colored stained glass windows and undescribable mosaics. Most of the exterior decorations has been redone over the centuries, however, much of the interior decorations are untouched. This Jerusalem stone building is the most ancient Moslem monument in the Holy Land and the 3rd holiest site in the Muslim world.

phOTO-o-tHE-dAY #39 - The life of St. John and the Church of St. John. It is generally accepted that St. John came to Ephesus together with the Virgin Mary somewhere between 37 & 48 A.D. Here they spent the remaining part of their lives. As Jesus was dying on the cross, he entrusted his mother to St.John-his most beloved disciple, [and “after these things the disciple took her into his own house”]. Those who believe this conclude that the two of them never departed from one another, and that when St. John came to Ephesus, the Virgin Mary came along with him. There is no doubt that St. John was in Asia Minor (Turkey) from 67 A.D. onward. St. Paul came to Ephesus between 55-58 A.D.and added new congregations to the first ones that had been founded there by other apostles. St. John started to preach the gospel after 67 A.D. and was twice threatened with death by the Emperor Domitian. He succeeded in working miracles. St. John was later exiled to the island of Patmos, where he wrote the Revelation, and returned to Ephesus in 95 A.D. St. John spent the last years of his life on Mount Ayausuluk. It is here, in Ephesus, where St. John wrote his gospel and letters. He died at the age of 100. He was buried here according to his last wishes. In the era when Christianity began to spread (the 3rd to 4th century A.D.), a martyion (monumental tomb) was built over his grave. Later, a basilica with a wooden roof was built around the martyrion. When this basilica was demolished by severe earthquakes in the 5h century, the Emporer Justinian (527 - 564 A.D.) constructed a six-domed church on this site, the ruins seen here (today). This church, which is cruciform in design, was one of the most impressive religious structures of its day. Since it played an important role in the Christian pilgrimages of the middle ages, this site attained the status of “the Church of the Cross” According to literary sources, the structure was in need of repair in the 12th century, and when Ephesus fell into Turkish hands after 1304, part of the church was converted to a mosque. A severe earthquake leveled it in the 1370’s. Excavations of this church and its surroundings have continued since 1920 and the work today is sponsored by the Turkish Ministry of Culture. A large river in Florida, which flows from the south to the north, is named after St.John.

phOTO-o-tHE-dAY #64 - About fifty feet from the Mediterranean sea, in Caesarea Israel, is a section of an ancient aqueduct. Herod’s harbor was once the largest port in the entire old world. Because there was no natural water available here, the Roman legion built a pipeline, bringing water from the foothills of Mt.Carmel eight miles away. A natural rock channel four miles long was chiseled first and the remaining four miles of the water channel was built of descending limestone delivering the needed water to Caesarea Maritima. A small portion of the aqueduct channel remains above this arch, the rest buried under wind blown sand.

Living in ease alongside the Negev desert nature, residing in tents that are cool in the day, warm at night and made of tightly woven, colorful yarns of sheep, goats and camel. Small piles of stones laid in a pyramid shape marks the boundaries of the bedouin and indicate certain uses of property for different times of the calendar. This Bedouin is well known for his hospitality, and coffee is the symbol. A traditional drink served in tiny brass cups, the taste bitter, the after effects strong.

This is a slowly erasing, silent sentinel in Peach Springs, Arizona. Far away from time, in another zone, near a place unknown. A (post) modern investment by a mom named Ethel & a Pop in overalls, that served regional fare and where penny candy was dispensed in the Vendorama. A sad, profitless end product of the 70’s big oil crude “ga$OILine crises” . Subsequently leading to the contraction of petroleum hoard and hidden technologies. Could this be one of Al Bell’s fantastic “Flying A” filling stations? Or the ‘Rolling Refueler’ paddock of Raymond Deitz? a Sinclair Dinosaur? Imagine pulling in here & having your time traveling machine serviced by multiple attendants, all before headin’ back out on the meandering telephone pole route ... memorizing the real downtime here and catching a positive attitude from complete strangers living in a peach pie breeze.

Matthew 10:16. Doves were sometimes even used as a substitute for sacrifice by pilgrims to the Temple who couldn’t afford a larger animal. Doves symbolize gentleness and a means of communication, and since they are kosher, fresh food. Doves are found all over the world and at the Western Wall of the Temple within the Old City walls of Jerusalem have built nests and live comfortably in the crevices between the ancient stones, amid the people’s ascending prayers.

phOTO-o-tHE-dAY #97 - here is an photograph of the 2005 Grand Prix Formula One Champion Fernando Alonso of Spain in action, entering Turn 10, at the U.S.G.P. F1 race at Indianapolis. Fernando, at age 26, is (now) the 2nd youngest F1 champion ever, garnering 7 Wins, 6 Poles, 5- 2nds & 3- 3rds in 2005. Driving a Reanult R25 cleverly quick all season, Fernando slugged it out with the two teams of McLaren Mercedes. Riding on Bridgestone tires, Renault also garnered the Manufacturers Title trophy. Fernando was also 1 of 8 citizens to receive this year's Prince of Asturias prize, which honors work in Science, Art, Communications, Literature, International Cooperation, and Sport.
